I was/am/had been driving/going/out for a fast trip when it hit/occurred to me/suddenly dawned on me that my keys were missing/gone/vanished. Panic set in/started to creep up/took over as I realized/understood/figured out that I was/am/had been stranded/locked out/trapped inside my own vehicle.
My phone battery was nearly dead, and I didn't have a spare set of keys with me. I examined the car thoroughly for any sign of them, but they were nowhere to be found.
